Museums
France
Housed in a fine mansion built in 1873, the museum contains the very rich collections of a family of merchants of the Marseille upper middle class, which reached its apogee after 1848. Like other great French collections built up in the second half of the 19th century, the collections presented provide a superb illustration of the artistic eclecticism of the "enlightened" amateurs of that time. The mansion and the collections were donated to the City of Marseille in 1919.
While the 18th century occupies pride of place in the collection, the High Middle ages, the Renaissance and the 19th century are no less well represented, with some major works.
