The M.A.A.O.A contains works from the continents of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. The exhibition is displayed in three areas: - the first room is devoted to African art: it includes in particular the L- P Guerre bequest and loans from the Marseille CCI. - the second room focuses on the Oceanic and American Indian collections: it opens with the collection of human heads donated by Professor Gastaut. - the third is reserved for the collection of Mexican popular art donated by the film-maker François Reichenbach. This museum, dedicated to non-Western art, demonstrates great variety in its collections.

The Collections

The MAAOA, opened in 1992 on the second floor of the Vieille Charité center, displays works from the continents of Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
The museum is designed around the presentation of a number of different collections with the emphasis on diversity and quality.
The museum was originally based on two major sources: part of the Léonce and Pierre Guerre collection of African art, bequeathed in 1978 to the city of Marseille, and the collection of human heads acquired from Professor Gastaut in 1989.
In the same year, the Marseille Chamber of Commerce and Industry agreed to lend some of its collection, drawn from the city's former "colonial" museums, which it administers. This loan considerably enhanced the variety of civilizations represented.
Furthermore, in 1993, the film-maker François Reichenbach bequeathed the museum his collection of Mexican popular art, comprising over 2,500 objects.
This initial corpus has been joined by a number of major pieces, the result of fundraising, donations and purchases.
