Museums
France
This museum, established in 1863, is one of the oldest in Marseille. Château Borély served as its setting until 1989, when it moved to the Vieille Charité building. The museum occupies a large section of the first floor of this building, with curators' offices, library, events room and the galleries offering the visitor an extensive overview of the Mediterranean civilizations of Antiquity.
History
The museum holds three major collections: Egyptian antiquities, Classical antiquities and Regional antiquities. Many items originated from the collections of merchants, former consuls in Middle Eastern countries, ship owners and naval officers. These original holdings have been enriched over the years by valuable gifts, bequests and purchases which have made the museum a leader in its field
