Mythology of the West
In American Art, 1830-1940
The grandiose and violent story of the discovery and conquest of the West, its fierce resistance and its dreamlike landscapes, already a legend before it was over, is a pillar of American civilization. Extraordinary art works about the West appeared from the beginning of the 19th century, most unknown to this day in Europe. Even in the United States, this work is marginalized by art historians and is not present in the classic fine arts museums.
